The first ride of 2014 was the Cap2Cap which starts in Richmond, VA and roundtrips down and back to Williamsburg. An extremely flat ride (not quite Seagull flat) with a whole lotta nothing to see. Just not much unless one likes to look at decrepit houses, people mowing lawns, road kill or trees.
The fun part of this ride was the addition of cycling enthusiasts George Perry and Danimal Clarke. This was George's inaugural century ride and he is definitely looking forward to many more in the future. This was Danimal's third century and he has finally figured out that it's better to train before tackling such a distance. We were joined by a 4th rider named Chuck who did well despite entire body pain around mile 85.
Everyone was happy at the beginning |
The ride got more interesting in the higher mileage as my IT bad started getting tight, Chuck was feeling like a train wreck, and Danimal/George were wearing down as they were re-thinking their decisions to ride a mountain bike.
The highlight of the trip came as Chuck and I were in the finishers tent drinking beer. A derecho-like thunderstorm came rolling through the area and it was impressive. Don't mess with Mother Nature. That wind and rain was formidable. Chuck and I were honestly worried about Danimal and George. We thought about getting in the car and driving the course to go get them. Problem was, we weren't done with our beers.
As we slurped our beers, somewhere around 45 minutes later they'd rolled up and we lifted our beers to them.
That isn't sweat on Danny and George |
